Beyond the framework

This article describes the development of intelligent transport system (ITS) architecture in three US states. ITS architecture enables integration and partnership between agencies and authorities across a region. The state of Texas features widely differing terrain and weather, urban and rural areas. A project team was assigned to each of three geographic areas and each ITS architecture and deployment plan is customized to meet regional needs as well as providing statewide consistency. Local stakeholders are the driving force.
