Alameda and Contra Costa Counties in the San Francisco Bay Area are using solar power to operate traffic monitoring sites along two corridors that are part of the East Bay SMART Corridors program. Using solar power and radio modems to communicate traffic data does not intrude into heavily traveled streets and eliminates congestion that usually accompanies installation of traffic monitoring equipment. It also avoids the costs of digging up the road to install cables.
