This article describes the increasing popularity of in-vehicle navigation systems, fueled perhaps by ever-greater features as well as decreases in price. Both trends however are challenging for those developing today's integrated systems, according to the author, who describes potential development pitfalls in terms of the various technologies: GNSS, dead reckoning (DR)/inertial, digital mapping, user interface, and auto-routing. The author describes limitations of Global Positioning System (GPS), how to improve GPS performance, as well as problems with various testing methods.
