This article describes the advantages and disadvantages of video detectors as a substitute for inductive loop detectors (ILD) for vehicle detection. ILD have the disadvantage of costly installation and maintenance, while video detectors offer unstable performance under certain adverse conditions and, in addition, require heuristic knowledge of image processing or field experience. The author writes that Omron Corporation in Japan has found a solution to those problems by developing a stereovision-based vehicle video detector called the Silhouette Vision Sensor (SVS)
