In 2005, Germany was the world leader in electricity generation from windpower. As per the end of last year, Germany boasted some 17,500 operational plants with an installed nominal output of around 18,400 megawatts (MW). Among recently installed wind turbines, the average output has increased from 1.4 MW in 2002 to around 1.8 MW in 2005. In 2005, approximately 4.3 p.c. of gross electricity consumption was supplied by windpower.
